The lab’s outreach and educational activities.
This is the University of Florida’s undergraduate botany club and campus chapter of the Botanical Society of America. We hold weekly meetings where we learn about plants, plan activities to raise awareness about plants on campus, and mentor students in various plant-focused courses on campus. Learn more at our website, or follow us on Facebook. Dr. Sessa is the faculty advisor for this group.
Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE)
WiSE at UF is an organization for graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and staff in the STEM fields to foster success for women and minorities at all stages of their careers in these fields. We hold activities throughout the year that focus on professional development, support, and advocacy for women and minorities in STEM. All genders are welcome and encouraged to attend our meetings and events. Dr. Sessa is the faculty advisor for this group.
Dr. Sessa leads talks, walks, and workshops on fern biology, natural history, and cultivation, and is always looking for more places to talk about ferns!
We are also involved in the Botanical Society of America’s PlantingScience initiative, which pairs scientist mentors with middle- and high-school student teams studying various aspects of plant biology in their science classes. Dr. Sessa has been a mentor since 2008 and served on the Master Plant Science Team for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 to help beta-test a new module based on C-Fern, Ceratopteris richardii.
